Hal Gould was the front pioneer in establishing fine art photography galleries. In 1969 Hal Gould and the Colorado Photographic Arts Center decided to set up a gallery that would show fine art photography when the Denver Art Museum continued to refuse to show exceptional photography exhibits that were available. The gallery was just across the street. Eventually Hal took on the gallery as sole operator. His gallery, Camera Obscura, was the oldest fine-art photography studio in the world until it closed in 2012.
Immediately after opening Hal’s gallery, start-up galleries on each coast came to Hal for advice. Camera Obscura represented the world’s finest photographers. Hal represented and sold my work. I’ve interviewed Hal several times and this was for a segment on our local CBS affiliate, KCNC in 1995.
