Jim Salestrom — Breckenridge, Colorado  ·  Kent Gunnufson

This video is a shortened version of the Jim Salestrom Story that premiered at the Breckenridge International Film Festival. It's about a former member of the Dolly Parton Band who moved to Breckenridge, Colorado and fulfilled his life's dream of living in the high Colorado Rockies.

Jim Salestrom is the kind of musician who could have stayed on the road forever. He had the credentials — years touring with Dolly Parton, a career that took him across the country and back. But somewhere along the way, the mountains called louder than the highway. He made the choice that a lot of people talk about and very few actually make: he traded the tour bus for Breckenridge.

What he found there was not a retreat from music but a deeper connection to it. The Colorado Rockies have a way of stripping things down to what matters. For Salestrom, what mattered was the songwriting itself — the craft of putting a story into a melody, of finding the right words for what the mountains look like at first light or what it feels like to drive over a high pass in October with the aspens turning.

His music carries that landscape in it. You can hear the altitude in it — the space, the quiet, the particular quality of light that you only get above 9,000 feet. It's Colorado music in the truest sense: not a genre, but a place.

The film premiered at the Breckenridge International Film Festival, which felt right. Breckenridge has always been a town that takes its artists seriously, and Salestrom has been part of the fabric of that community for years. The festival gave the story the audience it deserved.

I've always believed that the best stories about mountain life are the ones told by people who chose it deliberately — who gave something up to be here and never looked back. Jim Salestrom is one of those people. His music is the proof.
