Jerry Uelsmann — Composite Photography Pioneer

Interview 1994

Jerry Uelsmann is truly one of the legendary photographers that led the change in creating photographic art. His composite images created a universe of unbelievable imagery — from hot dogs floating over the surf to human forms emerging from rock formations.

His technique was impeccable and tone ranges full-toned long before the use of Photoshop allowed imitators to more easily emulate his work. Working entirely in the darkroom with multiple enlargers, Uelsmann crafted seamless surrealist images that challenged the notion of photography as a purely documentary medium.

In this 1994 Photo Talk interview, Jerry discusses his process, his influences, and what it means to spend a lifetime pushing the boundaries of what a photograph can be. He reflects on the relationship between imagination and craft, and why the darkroom — with all its physical constraints — remained his preferred creative space even as digital tools began to transform the medium.
